often asked about the program Will I have enough time? When you become a Big Brother/Big Sister, you're asked to make a one year commitment to spend 3-6 hours a week with your Little Brother or Sister - at times that fits YOUR schedule. What would you normally be doing this week? Washing your car? Going to a game or the movies? Spending time outside or just puttering around the house? As a Big Brother/Big Sister, you could be doing these same activities with a child - and making a positive difference in their life! I've never really worked with kids before...what do I have to offer? YOURSELF! We all have strengths and weaknesses. The Big Brother/Big Sister matching process is designed to match your strengths with the needs of the child. If you encounter a situation where you need help, you will have a Case Manager assigned to you for advice and assistance. How will I know what to do? Since "Bigs" and "Littles" are matched according to their common interests, being a Big Brother or Big Sister comes naturally. That's the whole idea - being a friend. In fact, you will select your own Little Brother or Sister on the things you have in common. Will I really make a difference? You can't help all of the kids on our waiting list. But you can help one. Teachers and counselors report significant improvements among matched children - behaviorally and academically. Kids learn from this one-to-one support. Am I really the kind of person you're looking for? YES. To one of the kids on our waiting list, you would make a GREAT Big Brother, Big Sister or Couples match. YOU REALLY DO HAVE A LOT TO OFFER! I'm interested, but isn't there some way I could find out more before I decide? DEFINITELY. You can call Family Services at 866-4500, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5:00. We will be more than happy to answer any of your questions or concerns.
